Former Lions competing in college wrestling

I wanted to do an update on Lisbon wrestlers competing in college as we begin the new year of competition.

In the recent InterMat Rankings from January 3 Cael Happel of UNI is ranked #8 at 141 lbs. Happel went 2-1 at the Collegiate Duals in Nashville on December 19. He dropped a 4-2 decision to #3 Jesse Mendez of Ohio State. Happel then won by a major decision against North Carolina State and a tech fall over Lock Haven.

UNI will be back on the mat on Saturday (Jan 6) in Lincoln with a dual meet against #3 Nebraska and Wyoming. Happel will face #6 Brock Hardy of Nebraska and #31 Cole Brooks of Wyoming. The UNI-Nebraska meet is at 4 PM CST and will be available on BIG+.

We had two Lisbon wrestlers competing at Soldier Salute in Coralville on December 29-30. Cade Siebrecht of the University of Iowa won his first two matches at 149 to make the Quarterfinals. He then dropped two matches to Iowa teammates to finish 2-2 for the tournament. 

Brandon Paez competed at 125 for UNI. After a first round bye Paez won by a tech fall in round two. In the Quarterfinals he dropped a match the #7 nationally ranked Jore Volk of Wyoming. Paez then had to medical forfeit from the tournament.

Indy Harbaugh and Wyatt Smith competed at the North Central Open in Naperville, Illinois on December 9. Smith placed fifth with a 4-2 record with two pins. Harbough was 1-2 with a major decision and did not place at 149.

For the season Smith is listed at 9-3 as a true freshman at Hwt.

Coe will be competing at the NWCA National Duals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls today and tomorrow. Coe will face Johnson and Whale at Noon today. Smith is listed on the roster for Coe on TrackWrestling.

Coe is scheduled to be at the Cliff Keen Mike Duroe Invitational next Saturday, January 13. I will let you know should Smith and Harbaugh compete for Coe.
